The air was thick with fog as we made our way across the moors in the jeep. We rode with the lights on low so as not to draw attention, although there was nothing we could do about the sound of the motor.
âAs if we needed the world to be even darker,â I muttered.
Callan grinned at me. âWhatâs the matter, brave knight? Afraid of the dark?â
âLook at this place. I bet itâs crawling with monsters.â
âYou seem to forget you travel with the most dangerous monster of all.â His fangs glimmered in the dim light.
I hadnât forgotten. Not even for a second.
âHow is it that Mulberry can speak with a human tongue?â Callan asked.
âNo idea. I imagine thereâs a lot about this world we donât understand.â The stones. The berserkers. Traveling alone with a deadly vampire. As far as I was concerned, my whole reality was being called into question.
âYou really think heâll be able to shift back?â Callan asked.
âIf my theory is correct, yes.â
âYour theory being that a stone like the two in our possession can influence shapeshifters?â
I nodded.
âWill you be disappointed if youâre wrong?â
My gaze flicked to him. âWhat do you mean?â
âI feel like part of you wants to point to some external reason for bad behavior so you can absolve them of wrongdoing. Maybe there are simply crazed wolves in the world who act like primitive animals and sometimes those animals attack people.â
âLike there are vampires who prey on the weak and vulnerable instead of going through the proper channels?â
He frowned. âWhy do I get the sense thereâs a story there?â
I told him about the vampire den in Mayfair and what happened to Juddâs family.
Callan was silent for a prolonged moment. âIâll look into it for you when we return to the city.â
I looked at him askance. âWhy would you do that?â
âBecause youâre right. Like many things, it shouldnât have happened. Iâll do my part to set matters right.â
This vampire seemed very different from the Prince Callan who strutted around the city. I took a chance and raised an uncomfortable subject.
âIs this because of what happened in Birmingham?â
His fingers tightened on the wheel. âNo one has ever spoken to me about that day. Not even the king himself.â
âWant to talk about it?â The moment felt strangely intimate.
âI donât remember much, to be honest, although I wish I could remember every detail.â
A sharp intake of breath followed his admission and he shot a quick glance at me.
âOh, no. Not to relish it. To own it. I owe it to those people to remember what happened. What I did.â
âDid you know what you were doing?â
He kept his eyes on the road. âOf course. I was twelve. Old enough to know.â He stopped before he added âbetter.â
âItâs not unusual for a boy to strive to please his father, especially a father whoâs also his king.â I was treading on dangerous ground but something spurred me on.
âI knew what I was doing. I was a powerful vampire even at that age and I was eager to prove it.
